talkSPORT betting tips – Best racing bets and expert advice for Saturday at Newbury

Newbury’s best race of the Flat season is the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes and it takes place at the Berkshire track on Saturday.

The main event is well supported by six other quality contests, so there’s plenty to look forward to.

There are three 2024 Guineas winners amongst the field of nine and Rosallion and Notable Speech are set to renew their rivalry, with the score currently being 1-1.

Our expert has had a good look at the entire card and picked out their three strongest fancies to follow, including Roger Teal’s stable star in the big race.

    12.50 Newbury – Al Aasy

Newbury gets underway with the Group 3 Aston Park Stakes over a 1m4f and a fascinating field of eight has been declared, including the 2023 Ascot Gold Cup winner Courage Mon Ami. William Haggas is bidding to win the race for the third time in five years.

He runs Al Aasy and the eight-year-old is regularly underestimated, which is always dangerous to do in races at this sort of level. He returned to winning ways with a narrow success over 1m2f at Sandown last month and that trip would have been short enough for him these days.

The return to 1m4f will be an added bonus with that in mind and there’s plenty of form which suggests he’s the one to beat here. This son of Sea The Stars won the Glorious Stakes at Goodwood last summer and although it wasn’t the deepest of races for the grade, he had plenty in hand.

He’s a proven performer here at Newbury, having won four of his seven starts at the track, including this very race in 2021. You can put a line through his disappointing course and distance display in October as the heavy ground was to blame for that performance.

    2.00 Newbury – Genealogy

Aidan O’Brien doesn’t have too many handicap runners in Britain but it’s always worth taking note when he does. He sends over the lightly raced Genealogy, who had just three starts at two and is making his handicap debut here.

Genealogy ran well on debut over a mile at the Curragh in August when finishing second to stablemate Acapulco Bay. There’s a good chance he could have finished a little closer if not for the fact that he had to wait for some racing room.

Going one better at Punchestown after that, he showed signs of greenness but the penny dropped eventually and he was well on top at the finish. O’Brien’s colt struggled in Group 3 company next time but improvement is anticipated this year and the step up in trip will help.

    2.35 Newbury – Dancing Gemini

Roger Teal’s stable star was less than a length away from winning a Classic last season and although his form fell apart a bit after that, all the evidence suggests he has taken a big step forward as a four-year-old.

Second in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains last season, he ran a stormer and only went down by half a length. Connections tried different things with him after that but he didn’t get home in the Derby and he couldn’t get anywhere near City Of Troy in the Eclipse.

He began the current campaign with a commanding victory in Listed company at Doncaster in March and followed up in a Group 2 at Sandown after that. The son of Camelot has the beating of Tamfana and Lead Artist on that evidence and deservedly returns to the top table.
