Simone Biles sends passionate ‘things don’t go as planned’ message as Olympic legend is granted major honor

SIMONE BILES called on the next generation of athletes and graduates to “keep going” as she was bestowed with a major honor.

The seven-time Olympic gold medallist spoke at the University’s commencement ceremony on Monday, delivering a passionate message.

As part of her 12-minute commencement speech, she said: “You might think I’m used to the spotlight, but I would probably feel more comfortable if they had allowed me to vault onto the stage or do a little floor routine.

“But really, today is your day. While I may be considered an elite athlete, I know that you are elite students.

“I always dreamed of going to college, not just to be part of a collegiate gymnastics team, but to study medicine, to become a children’s nurse or a paediatrician, and to enjoy all the fun of a college campus.

“But for me, that dream bumped up against others, and ultimately I chose a different path

“But I do think my path and yours have a lot in common, although mine probably included a few more sequins and leotards.”

Biles, who previously committed to UCLA before turning pro at age 18 and missing out on college gymnastics, ended her speech with a rallying cry.

Adding: “The world doesn’t need you to be perfect. It needs you to be bold, it needs you to care, and to keep going even when things don’t go as planned.

“So go out there and write your own story — one that only you can tell.”

Biles has battled with adversity and things not going to plan her entire career.

Notably returning from a two-year hiatus from gymnastics after battling with the pressure of the sport and the impact on her mental health.

While she has also had to deal with persistent injuries and competed knowing that she hasn’t been fully fit

Now the Olympic superstar – who also boasts 30 World Championship medals – has been focusing on life away from the gymnasium.

Most recently she was spotted enjoying a night at the glamorous Met Gala alongside husband and NFL star Jonathan Owens.
