The Weld Critical Incident Response Team is investigating after a Greeley police officer shot and killed a man wielding a knife Wednesday afternoon in the 1900 block of 2nd Street.
Greeley police received several reports of a man in the 500 block of 16th Avenue brandishing a knife, according to a news release distributed Wednesday evening on behalf of the Weld Critical Incident Response Team. Police said an officer located the man in the 1900 block of 2nd Street swinging the knife at passing cars.
Police said the man “walked quickly” toward the officer and that he would not comply with the officer’s commands to drop the knife. The officer shot the man and — after additional officers arrived on scene — police performed life-saving measures until medical personnel arrived and pronounced the man dead at 2:25 p.m., according to the post.
Police are withholding the man’s identity awaiting the Weld coroner’s office notifying his next of kin, according to the release. Police said the man was on parole but didn’t say of what crime he was convicted.
No officers nor other members of the public were injured, police said.
The Critical Incident Response Team consists of members of law enforcement agencies in the local judicial district who investigate incidents in which an officer uses or attempts to use deadly force while on duty. The team presents findings to the district attorney, who decides whether to clear the officer of charges or refer the shooting to a grand jury.
