The Derby could have a different look to it once the dust settles on the 2025 Dante Stakes. The ante-post favourite for the Derby, The Lion In Winter, returns to the track today, but could be vulnerable on his first start of the season.

9 The Lion In Winter (4)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 11- Rating: – Jockey: Ryan Moore Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Odds: 1/1The unbeaten son of Sea The Stars and current Derby ante-post favourite The Lion In Winter makes his anticipated return to the track, but he may be vulnerable today. The Lion In Winter was pencilled in to make his return in the 2000 Guineas, but a setback meant that team Ballydoyle had to shelve his Newmarket plan and switch to the Dante, which was also touch and go for a while. The Lion In Winter has winning course form, but it is not often that Aidan O’Brien sends one of his more fancied Derby horses to the Dante, and going on what Aidan O’Brien has stated in the past few days, there will be plenty left to work with for The Lion In Winter. This race is not his main target, and he will not be given a hard time if he is not in with a winning chance, so at his price and given his interrupted prep, it may be worth taking him on today.

1 Alpine Trail (9)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 111 Rating: 104 Jockey: William Buick Trainer: Charlie Appleby Odds: 11/2This progressive front-runner is unbeaten in his three runs to date, which includes a win at this track over 1m2f in April. That win was followed by a Listed win at Newmarket last month in good style. He has peak race fitness on his side, and his rating of 104 may underestimate his ability. Given that he may get away on the front end, he could be nailed on for a place finish here.

11 Wimbledon Hawkeye (7)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 213-25 Rating: 112 Jockey: Hector Crouch Trainer: James Owen Odds: 7/1Progressive as a two-year-old, which saw Wimbledon Hawkeye win a Group 2 at Newmarket after finishing just over one length off The Lion In Winter over this course, and finished off his two-year-old campaign with a third in the Group 1 Futurity Trophy Stakes at Doncaster, there was a lot to look forward to this season.
His three-year-old season started well with a second to the now 2000 Guineas second Field Of Gold, but he failed to build on that when a well-beaten sixth in the 2000 Guineas, but did he look to get outpaced a long way from home. Now that he is finally getting to step up in trip, we may be about to witness a career-best from Wimbledon Hawkeye. This talented son of Kameko has a big chance at the prices.

10 Tuscan Hills (3)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 11- Rating: 103 Jockey: David Egan Trainer: Raphael E Freire Odds: 14/1Tuscan Hills is two from two as a two-year-old, with the second of those wins coming at Listed level at Pontefract on soft ground. He is untried at anything faster than good, but going on how he won easily on good ground on debut and his action, he should not have any problem with the forecast good to firm conditions.
It’s hard to know how far he can go this season, but today will tell a lot about what lies ahead for Tuscan Hills. A watching brief is advised unless he becomes strong in the betting.

6 Pride Of Arras (2)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 1- Rating: – Jockey: Rossa Ryan Trainer: Ralph Beckett Odds: 14/1Pride Of Arras won on his racecourse debut and is an unknown quantity but will need to hit the ground running on only his second career start. His debut win is well below what will be required here, and he needs to be well above average to play a leading role today.

7 Royal Playwright (8)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 1328-3 Rating: 108 Jockey: Oisin Murphy Trainer: Andrew Balding Odds: 16/1Given that some of his rivals have to get to the kind of form that Royal Playwright reached as a two-year-old, the Andrew Balding-trained colt looks overpriced here. His two-year-old form behind Wimbledon Hawkeye and Field Of Gold reads well coming into the Dante.
He had a pipe opener at Newcastle last month where he could have won with a bit more luck. Now, with that run under his belt, combined with the step-up in trip, he looks like a big each-way player at his current price.

2 Damysus (5)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 1-3 Rating: 104 Jockey: Kieran Shoemark Trainer: John & Thady Gosden Odds: 18/1An odds-on winner at Southwell on debut in December was followed by a more than satisfactory run in the Grade 3 Classic Trail at Sandown in April when he faded late. Damysus is entitled to come on fitness and mentality-wise for that run and is a fascinating runner here. It’s hard to weigh up his current form, but going on his run at Sandown, he can take another big step forward here. Today may not be his day, but he is one to keep an eye on for the remainder of the season.

5 Nightwalker (11)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 313-3 Rating: 102 Jockey: Robert Havlin Trainer: John & Thady Gosden Odds: 22/1When trained by Sir Michael Stoute, Nightwalker’s third behind Delacroix reads well since the former has gone on to win back-to-back Group 3, catapulting himself to second favourite for the Epsom Derby. Still, Nightwalker didn’t impress on his first run for John & Thady Gosden last month. He will need to show considerable improvement for that comeback run, and he is entitled to, but a watching brief may be best served today.

8 Sea Scout (1)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 51-1 Rating: 105 Jockey: Harry Davies Trainer: Simon & Ed Crisford Odds: 25/1Sea Scout took a massive step forward when making a winning return this year as he took care of the Aidan O’Brien-trained Trinity College in a Listed Derby Trial at Epsom when sent off 40/1. That was a game performance, but he will need to improve even more to play a big role in the finish. It’s not beyond the realms of impossibility, but it’s doubtful.
Star rating:
Bet on Sea Scout with Paddy Power
4 Mister Rizz (10)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 21 Rating: – Jockey: Tom Marquand Trainer: Ed Walker Odds: 33/1Only two runs to date for Mister Rizz, and it took him two goes to get off the mark, and he did so on a short 2/13 favourite at Doncaster. He obviously needs a huge leap forward on that form, but even with improvement, he looks out of his depth.
Star rating:
Bet on Mister Rizz with Betfred
3 Devil’s Advocate (6)
Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lb Form: 31-6 Rating: 100 Jockey: Benoit De La Sayette Trainer: John & Thady Gosden Odds: 40/1Well beaten by Sea Scout at Epsom when sent off the 6/4 favourite, and after that, Devil’s Advocate now looks up against it here. It’s hard to make a case for him on the back of that display.
Star rating:
Bet on Devil’s Advocate with Ladbrokes
Group 2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes verdict
We should be set up for a vintage renewal of the Dante Stakes, and even though The Lion In Winter has been the talking horse all over the winter, it can pay to take him on in his first run of the season, given that he has not had the perfect prep for his seasonal return.
WIMBLEDON HAWKEYE is a horse I have taken to, and I have always been looking forward to him stepping up in trip, which he gets today. He has race fitness on his side and has a close second to The Lion In Winter over this course last season, giving him more appeal. He looks nailed on for a place finish at worst.
