The new service is now live in parts of Charlotte, North Carolina.

It rolled out on Wednesday and will deliver within a four-mile radius of select restaurants located inside the Arboretum Shopping Center.

Early options include Curry Junction, Joa Korean food, Matcha Cafe Maiko, and Panera Bread.

To try the new feature, eligible customers will see a “Drone” icon on the DoorDash app homepage.

Once selected, users can browse drone-eligible restaurants and check out like normal.

Only small, lightweight items qualify, and live tracking is available once the drone launches.

When a drone makes it to your property, it will stay floating in the air and slower lower the meal down using a tether.

The drones are operated by Wing, which partnered with DoorDash to speed up deliveries.

Wing says orders can arrive in minutes and are built to handle light rain and wind.

A single pilot can oversee several drones at once, but flight paths are fully automated.

When the drone reaches your home, it lowers the food using a cable while hovering.

“Whether it’s your favorite Panera sandwich, a savory snack from DashMart, or a local matcha latte on DoorDash, there’s something special about watching your order arrive by air in minutes,” said Harrison Shih, Head of Product for DoorDash Labs.

As a launch deal, Panera is offering $1 bowls of mac & cheese for drone delivery for a limited time.

The Charlotte rollout follows previous launches in Virginia and Texas.

DoorDash and Wing first tested the service in Australia in 2022 before bringing it stateside.

“We’re incredibly excited to launch Wing’s drone delivery service there,” said Wing CEO Adam Woodworth at the time.

DashMart items – including snacks, drinks, and medicine- are also available by drone.

There’s also a limited-time promo with local brands like Cheerwine, Life Raft Treats, and Appalachia Cookie Co.

More restaurants and neighborhoods are expected to be added later this year.

The drone update comes after DoorDash took aim at so-called delivery cheats with a new policy.
