WAYMO has recalled thousands of its self-driving cars after concerns about crashes kept piling up.
The autonomous driving company introduced a new technology to quell consumer complaints about the collisions.
Waymo confirmed that the recall would affect 1,212 vehicles that used its fifth-generation automated driving system (ADS) software, as reported by Reuters.
The company offers its services in four cities — San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Austin — with plans to set up fleets in Atlanta and Miami soon.
With the roughly 1,500 Waymo cars in operation, there have been 16 collisions between 2022 and late 2024.
Although there have not been any reported injuries, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has looked into the potential safety concerns regarding the self-driving vehicles.
The NHTSA investigated the company’s robotaxis after it appeared that the vehicles were crashing into objects that were easily avoidable.
