John Ratzenberger is known for so many different loveable roles—Cliff Clavin on Cheers, Mack in Cars, and Hamm in Toy Story, to name a few. But the 78-year-old also knows his way around the kitchen.
Ratzenberger shared his favorite recipe for cabbage and bacon with VICE Munchies, and it’s nothing short of a savory revelation. “I think bacon is really the food of the gods,” he said, while prepping his dish. “That’s how we know God wants us to be happy.”
The actor revealed that he first came up with this dish while living in London, when he was a young person on a tight budget. The actor ended up striking a deal with a grocer named Nizam, who lived nearby, to get all of the fruits and vegetables that were past their prime. “This is one of the dishes I would make, because it was so cheap,” he said.
But even though it’s inexpensive, Ratzenberger swears his cabbage dish is an excellent choice for everyone. “Once you taste this dish, you’re going to become a cabbage fan,” he said. “I don’t understand why there aren’t restaurants dedicated to this dish.”
Those are some big, big promises for cabbage and bacon. Here’s why he's so wild about this comfort dish.

Let’s start with the price tag. As Ratzenberger pointed out, his cabbage and bacon dish is inexpensive. You’re really only talking about shelling out for the produce and meat. He adds some marinara sauce, too, but that’s technically optional.
Also worth noting: All of these ingredients hold up well over time in the fridge. So, if you happen to pick up a farmer’s market cabbage and forget about it, you should be just fine cooking it up a week later.

Cabbage is also a nutrient-packed vegetable that doesn’t get enough credit. A cup of the veggie delivers a bunch of vitamins, including magnesium, potassium, calcium and even a little protein. This works as a side dish with some chicken nor a pork chop or a satisfying main dish.
Also, the flavor is next level, according to Ratzenberger, who declares, “It may not be that good looking, but boy does it taste good.”

How to Make John Ratzenberger’s Cabbage and Bacon
This dish is packed with flavor and is so easy to make. Start by slicing a red cabbage, along with some onion. (Ratzenberger does point out that “you can throw anything in there,” so you have a little leeway here.)
Saute the onions and some garlic in a pan with olive oil. Toss in the chopped bacon and continue to cook, before adding some chopped bacon and cooking it. In a separate pan, cook the cabbage in olive oil until it’s soft. Here, you have some choices: You can either add marinara sauce or chopped apples (but not both).
Then, combine the cabbage and onion mixtures and let everything simmer for a bit to combine the flavors. Finish the whole thing off with pepper—Ratzenberger said you don’t need salt, thanks to the bacon. Finally, add your ingredients to a bowl or plate and dive in.
