Major pharmacy chain confirms plans to close another 68 locations after bankruptcy filing

A LEADING pharmacy chain has announced plans to shutter an additional 68 locations.

The news follows the company’s recent Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

Rite Aid is set to close 68 more stores as part of its ongoing bankruptcy proceedings, the company confirmed in a court filing on May 9.

The closures were added to the growing list in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey, where Rite Aid began Chapter 11 proceedings earlier this month.

The retail pharmacy chain, which operates approximately 1,240 locations across 15 states, first announced its bankruptcy on May 5.

The filing cited mounting debt and economic pressures in the retail and healthcare sectors.

    RESTRUCTURING PLANS

According to the company, store closures and sales will be a key part of its restructuring strategy.

“As we move forward, our key priorities are ensuring uninterrupted pharmacy services for our customers and preserving jobs for as many associates as possible,” Rite Aid CEO Matt Schroeder said in a statement.

The company emphasized that pharmacy services will remain available during the transition.

“Rite Aid customers can continue to access pharmacy services and products in stores and online, including prescriptions and immunizations,” it said in a release.

The newly added closures are just one phase of a larger plan to sell off or shutter underperforming locations.

    CLOSING LOCATIONS

Rite Aid said it is actively seeking buyers for some stores but is also preparing for additional store closing sales.

Rite Aid has secured $1.94 billion in new financing to support ongoing operations and maintain services while it navigates bankruptcy.

This funding will help keep existing locations running during the restructuring process.

Although not all Rite Aid stores will close immediately, the company has not ruled out additional closures in the future.

The pharmacy chain has faced growing financial pressure from legal liabilities related to opioid litigation and changing consumer habits.

    CUSTOMER IMPACT

As part of its bankruptcy strategy, Rite Aid is focused on transferring prescriptions to other pharmacies to avoid disrupting patient care.

Customers affected by store closures will be notified in advance and assisted in moving their records.

The company said store employees will continue to receive pay during the process and that efforts are underway to retain staff where possible.

Rite Aid’s Chapter 11 filing marks the second bankruptcy attempt in less than two years as it struggles to manage billions in debt.

The closures add to an already turbulent year for retail pharmacies, with Walgreens also shutting dozens of locations across the US.
