The Syrian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology announced the SilkLink project, in collaboration with global companies, aimed at developing the optical fiber infrastructure and building a regional internet hub in Syria.
Minister of Communications Abdulsalam Haykal stated via “X” on Tuesday, May 13, that the project “will place Syria on the digital map of the world as a strategic corridor for data movement between Asia and Europe.”
He added that the project represents a qualitative leap in the telecommunications infrastructure by creating a new and extensive optical fiber network.
The minister highlighted that the Ministry of Communications aims to implement the project with a select group of global companies, ensuring the highest quality and speed.
He explained that SilkLink is a vision for a digital future “worthy of Syrians and commensurate with their large capabilities and aspirations, and a step towards restoring our historical status as a meeting point for the world and a center for communication and exchange, just as we were along the Silk Road.”
The project will span approximately 4,500 kilometers of optical fibers, connecting the main Syrian cities (Damascus and Aleppo) with switching centers in Palmyra, and in the eastern and southern regions, in addition to a landing point for submarine cables in Tartus.
The project guarantees the activation of regional connection points with neighboring countries, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey, in addition to providing a new land route connecting Europe to Asia, according to the minister.
On May 4, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of Syria launched the first phase of the “Ugarit 2” project, in collaboration with the American telecommunications company (UNIFI), the Syrian Telecommunications Company, and the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA).
Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdulsalam Haykal announced via “X” the launch of the project to develop the equipment of the old submarine cable (30 years old), which will double the internet capacity coming to Syria within two months.
He explained that this first phase of the “Ugarit 2” project includes a second phase to lay a new submarine cable of 250 kilometers in length between Pentaskinos in Cyprus and Tartus.
Haykal added, according to the statement issued by the Ministry of Communications attached to the publication, “We are committed to building a modern and sturdy communications framework capable of meeting global economic requirements, focusing on ensuring reliable and high-quality connectivity for all Syrians, facilitating innovation and economic growth, and rebuilding strong global links. Our efforts will continue to advance steadily.”
Recently, the “Wi-Fi outdoor” service has emerged in Syria as a technical solution to provide digital connectivity that overcomes the destroyed infrastructure in Syria.
In a previous statement to Enab Baladi, the Director-General of the Telecommunications and Postal Regulatory Authority, Atef al-Diri, said that “Wi-Fi outdoor” technology is legally available to citizens through licenses granted to the applying companies, with continuous assessments to ensure compliance with the licensing terms.
These companies are approved to provide internet service to the public in areas beyond the coverage of the Syrian Telecommunications Company, through a direct access point to its internet network, in accordance with the regulatory provisions specified in the licensing document, according to al-Diri.
