A new spot that serves traditional street food from Israel along with unexpected world-inspired mash-up dishes joined the hustle and bustle of downtown Los Angeles’ Grand Central Market this week.
Miznon, which first opened in Tel Aviv in 2011 before expanding to cities that include Paris, Melbourne, Singapore, Toronto, Las Vegas, London and New York, opened its first California location at the more than 100-year-old Central Market on Saturday, May 10 with the goal of becoming a part of the fabric of the city.
“We cater to the young people that make the city work. We do Israeli Mediterranean food with most of it focused inside of a pita bread,” said Liad Balki, the executive chef of Miznon’s U.S. locations.
Launched by Chef Eyal Shani, the fast casual restaurant serves dishes like lamb and chicken pitas as well as nontraditional pitas and dishes inspired by the locals.
“It’s not complicated cuisine but maybe you can say a little more elevated. We try to incorporate the food scene of whatever location we open in and try to do a special pita that captures the essence of the city and what people like to eat,” he said.

For now though, diners can try unique pitas created for some of Miznon’s other international locations like the Ratatouille, which is made with tomato, eggplant, zucchini and onion with tahini and a hard boiled egg. Another internationally inspired dish is the Fish ‘N’ Chips Pita, which was created for Miznon’s London restaurant. It’s made with branzino, potato, pickles, aioli, parsley and vinegar.
As far as the new location goes, Balki said he wanted the restaurant to be in a space that has a lot of character and personality and is filled with energy.
“Part of what we do is about our energy, We’re Israeli so we play loud music, and we yell a lot and the communication is very lively in the kitchen so we need to be in a place that’s lively with a lot of food traffic and I think Grand Central Market is the perfect place for that,” he said.
Miznon LA is located at Grand Central Market, 317 Broadway, Los Angeles. For more information go to miznonusa.com.
