Komatsu to bring European forestry machines to Japan
Japanese machinery maker Komatsu will try European forestry machines – harvesters and “forwarders” – in Japan to boost productivity and trim labour needs.

It will test the use of the Cut-to-Length (CTL) method, where trees are felled, delimbed and cut into sized logs on site.

A harvester is used for felling and processing, while a forwarder transports the logs.

Japan mainly uses excavators in forestry instead of wheeled equipment owing to steep terrain.

Komatsu says CTL and a more mechanised approach will cut the number of machines and operators it needs, which would be useful as Japan has a chronic labour shortage.

It hopes the change will improve productivity and safety while reducing costs.

The trial will be conducted over a year on sites in Hokkaido, Honshu and Kyushu, involving the 22-ton Komatsu 931XC harvester and 14-ton Komatsu 855 forwarder. Tests will be carried out contrasting the CTL method against traditional techniques.

The plans, results and GPS data from the site will be studied to improve productivity and operation management.

Komatsu’s forestry machinery arm is the company’s third pillar, alongside construction and mining equipment.

Komatsu recently signed up to an initiative promoting emissions-free construction machinery at bauma 2025.
