MILLIONS of Americans are in line to pocket a one-time check worth up to $500 – and payments are set to arrive in weeks.
The special rebate is designed to help families with the impacts of inflation.
Officials first proposed the relief package last fall and the first round of checks could be sent out within the next fortnight, as reported by the CBS affiliate WTOC-TV.
The precise timetable for the first round of payments is yet to be confirmed, but it’s thought it could be the end of May or start of June.
And, the maximum payment sent will be $500 and the money comes from a $1 billion pot.
This check will be sent to Americans who filed joint tax returns.
Single taxpayers are set to pocket a $250 payment, while the figure is $375 for heads of households.
The relief is being sent out to residents in Georgia.
Up to four million people could be in line to receive the top amount.
But Americans were required to file their 2023 and 2024 tax returns by May 1 in order to be eligible for the payment.
Residents in Georgia had an extension to file their taxes due to Hurricane Helene.
Millions of Americans had to file their taxes by the April 15 deadline set out by chiefs at the Internal Revenue Service.
Refunds are being sent to taxpayers who live in Georgia permanently or have lived in the state for at least half of a year.
The vast majority of payments will be sent electronically, but some will be issued under paper format.
In previous years, around 75% of rebates were issued electronically.
Americans have been warned that it may take six to eight weeks for rebates to arrive.
REBATE TIMETABLE
State officials have warned their hotlines are busy, so taxpayers are encouraged to use the Department of Revenue’s online tool.
The rebate was signed into law by Georgia Governor, Brian Kemp, in April.
“Here in Georgia, we safeguard every dollar of taxpayer money, because we know it belongs to the people, not the government,” he said.
“While other states are running up budget deficits and raising taxes on their citizens, we’re investing in the priorities of our state while further cutting taxes and returning more than a billion dollars to hard-working Georgians.”
The rebate package was first unveiled in October.
Georgia is not the only state sending out payments to residents.
In South Carolina, residents can apply for a share of unclaimed property the state has.
More than 3,000 checks are set to be mailed over the coming weeks.
At a city level, Americans in Sacramento will also be able to apply for a program which could see them land $850 a month for a year.
Officials in Albuquerque, New Mexico, have also launched a guaranteed income program.
Scores of residents will receive a $750 payment per month for three years.
