High school sports postseason roundup: Windsor, Frontier Academy girls soccer victories highlight an eventful weekend

A pair of local girls soccer squads very much had their state championship hopes in tact after the first week of the postseason.

Windsor — the third seed in the 32-team Class 4A state tournament — cruised past No. 14 Coronado 7-0 in the second round of the tournament Saturday.

In the 2A state tournament, fifth-seeded Frontier Academy kicked off its postseason, after a first-round bye, with a tight 1-0 win against No. 12 Dawson in a second-round match of its own Saturday. Senior Dani Douglass scored the game’s only goal, which was assisted by sophomore Navaiya Soto.

The Wizards had won nine consecutive matches and carried a 14-3 record into a quarterfinals match against No. 6 Mead (14-2) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at H.J. Dudley Field. That match took place after the Tribune’s print deadlines Tuesday night. Check greeleytribune.com and read Friday’s print edition of the Greeley Tribune for coverage of that match.

Frontier Academy (14-2) is slated to bring its 14-match win streak into a 2A quarterfinals match against fourth-seeded Crested Butte (9-4-3) at 5 p.m. Wednesday on the campus of Western Colorado University in Gunnison.

    Quite the debut

In its fourth year of existence, the Severance boys volleyball program made a heck of an impression in its first state tournament competition during the 4A championships in Trojan Arena on the Fountain-Fort Carson campus this past week.

The Silver Knights — seeded fifth out of eight teams — went 3-2 overall and made it to the final day of the three-day affair, falling just one win shy of qualifying for the title match.

The Silver Knights  beat No. 4 DSST: College View 3-1 in the opening round Thursday. On Friday, they fell 3-1 to top-seeded eventual state champion Regis Groff before coming back shorty later to pick up a big 3-2 win No. 7 Stargate in the second round of the lower bracket.

During Saturday’s final day, Severance continued to show perseverance, as it beat No. 8 Lutheran 3-2 before falling to No. 3 Pueblo South 3-0 with a berth to Saturday night’s title match on the line.

Pueblo South went on to fall 3-0 to Regis Groff in the championship match.

The Silver Knights ended their fine season with a 22-8 record, easily the best result in the program’s brief history.

    Fire on the water

    Resurrection Christian powers through

Having a first-round bye, and a week off of action, didn’t slow the Resurrection Christian boys lacrosse team one bit.

The Cougars — seeded fifth in the 24-team 4A state tournament — blew past No. 12 Middle Park 11-4 in a second-round game Friday at the Loveland Sports Park.

With the win, Resurrection Christian (12-3) advanced to a quarterfinals game Tuesday night against No. 4 Air Academy (14-1). That game took place after the Tribune’s print deadlines.

Check out greeleytribune.com and read Friday’s Greeley Tribune print edition for the result of that game.

The Cougars led 4-2 after one quarter and 6-2 after two quarters against Middle Park (13-4). After the Panthers trimmed the gap to 6-4 in the third quarter, Resurrection Christian slammed the door with five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Lleyton Henry had a hat trick for the Cougars. Sophomore Jacob Adams added two goals and three assists.

    Overhead smash

Numerous local athletes played during Saturday’s final day of the 3A boys tennis state tournament at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs.

Resurrection Christian senior Isabella Prohs fell to Prospect Ridge sophomore Shannon Schmidt 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles third-place match. Prohs defeated Steamboat Springs freshman Abby Del Haya 6-3, 6-1 in the playback bracket’s semifinals a day earlier.

Two of Prohs’ teammates, seniors Chloe Lincoln and Jordan Taylor, defeated Eaton juniors Madi Smith and Trinity Salberg 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in the No. 1 doubles third-place match.

Smith’s and Salberg’s teammates, seniors Lily Kennedy and Evie Gavette, picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win over Holy Family freshman Anna Bardeau and junior Mallory Clerkin in the No. 2 doubles third-place match.

Eaton juniors Aya Kinoshita and Evelyn South dropped a 6-0, 6-3 third-place match against Evergreen senior Violet Penny and junior Ella Brown in the No. 3 doubles third-place match.
