Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bowler Spencer Johnson is unlikely to return for the remaining matches of IPL 2025 if the 18th edition of the event resumes. According to the latest reports, the Australian fast bowler has been dealing with a back injury and won't be available for the remaining IPL 2025 matches.
Spencer Johnson was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the mega auction before IPL 2025. He struggled to deliver in the tournament. The Australian pacer managed just one wicket in four matches at an economy rate of 11.73. KKR were on the verge of elimination before the season was suspended for a week.
Following the suspension of the league on May 9, several overseas players, including Spencer Johnson, returned to their respective countries. Johnson is unlikely to feature in the remainder of IPL 2025, even if the tournament resumes soon.
According to Daniel Cherny, chief cricket writer at Code Sports Australia, Johnson has been sidelined with a back injury and hasn’t played since April. Cherny stated that the pacer is not expected to make a comeback if the IPL resumes within the coming weeks.
"Spencer Johnson is unlikely to return to the IPL if it resumes in the next week or so. The KKR paceman has been dealing with a back injury and hasn’t played since last month," Cherny wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Defending Champions Nearly Out of Playoff Race
Kolkata Knight Riders were set to face SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 10 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on May 17 in their last two league matches of IPL 2025. Their most recent outing came against Chennai Super Kings on May 7, which turned out to be the final completed match.
The defending champions started their campaign with a seven-wicket loss to RCB and have struggled throughout the season.
With five wins and six losses from 12 matches, KKR are currently sixth in the standings with 11 points. Even if they win both remaining matches and reach 15 points, their chances of making the playoffs appear slim.
16 Matches, Including 12 League Games and Playoffs Still Pending
The Indian Premier League 2025 was suspended on May 9 following tensions between India and Pakistan. Fifty-seven matches were completed, and the 58th game between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) was halted after 10.1 overs. It remains undecided whether that match will be replayed.
A total of 16 matches are still pending, including 12 league games and the playoff fixtures. The BCCI is considering resuming the tournament between May 16 and May 30, following a ceasefire announcement that eased border tensions. However, any restart depends on the situation remaining stable.
The BCCI is considering hosting the remaining league games in cities, including Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru. Hyderabad was scheduled to host Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator, while Kolkata was set for Qualifier 2 and the Final. However, Ahmedabad is being considered as a backup venue for the final.
