Tommy Tuberville, a senator (R-Al) and former Auburn football head coach, affirmed the incoming arrival of a college sports commission reportedly being planned by President Donald Trump.
Tuberville is the latest to confirm Trump’s reported plans to create this commission, which will monitor college sports and its current unstable NIL landscape. Here’s what Tuberville had to say:
“He’s got a commission that he’s putting together,” Tuberville said Sunday morning on CNN, via ProFootballTalk. “I’ve recommended some people to go on it, of course. I’ve been working on it for four years. Nick Saban is gonna be involved. I think the NIL is in dire need of restructuring.”
There are many elements of the current atmosphere surrounding college sports that many, such as Tuberville, believe should be remedied. From players making and asking for unsustainable amounts of money to play at a specific school to excessive transferring and less emphasis on high school recruiting, plenty believe the system is on life support.
Tuberville’s hope, so he says, is to keep college sports from turning into a professional minor league of sorts. Roster continuation is becoming a lost art, and the allure of money at another school will always be there for the elite players.
Time will tell if this college sports commission is a step towards fixing the outstanding problem facing collegiate athletics.
