Check out these fantastic Mother’s Day movies below.

    'Because I Said So' (2007)

This 2007 rom-com is a perfect Mother's Day movie to watch. Because I Said So stars Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore as a fussy matriarch and her long-suffering daughter, respectively, and perfectly encapsulates the complex but loving dynamics between mothers and daughters. Daphne (Keaton) is a single mom of three adult daughters, and while the two oldest (Lauren Graham and Piper Perabo) are happily married, youngest daughter Milly (Moore) bounces from one breakup to the next.

Unable to let Milly handle her love life alone, Daphne takes out a personal ad for her daughter and seeks to steer her towards a man of her choosing. Of course, love never goes quite the way you plan. Whether it's Daphne's hilariously over-the-top attempts to find her daughter the perfect match or the heartfelt moments where they learn to accept each other's flaws, Because I Said So beautifully balances humor with earnest family messages.

    'Uptown Girls' (2003)

Starring Dakota Fanning and Brittany Murphy, Uptown Girls is a movie about the more unconventional mother-daughter relationships in life. When Naive heiress Molly Gunn (Murphy) loses her inheritance, she is forced to get a job as a nanny to the precocious and uptight Lorraine "Ray" Schleine (Fanning). Despite their difference in ages and maturity levels, both girls wind up finding some of the maternal support they never got from each other.

Their initially rocky relationship gradually transforms into a nurturing bond where each provides the emotional support and guidance the other is missing, highlighting that motherly love can come from unexpected places and people.

This funny, charming film emphasizes themes of growth, acceptance and the transformative power of love, which are great themes for Mother's Day. Through humor and poignant moments, Uptown Girls shows us that motherhood is not just defined by blood relations, but also by the care, guidance and love shared between individuals. It's a slightly less obvious, but still worthwhile, addition to your Mother's Day movie marathon.

    'Till' (2022)

Till differs from the other films on this list in that it's not a feel-good film — instead, it is a powerful and historically significant drama that revolves a mother's love and her passionate search for justice for her son. The drama centers around the tragic story of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African American boy who was brutally lynched in Mississippi in 1955 after being accused of "behaving inappropriately" towards a white woman. A major focal point of the narrative is Emmett's mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, portrayed by the immensely talented Danielle Deadwyler. Mamie's journey of grief and resilience highlights her determination to fight for justice and truth following her son's lynching.

Mamie Till-Mobley's advocacy and her decision to hold an open-casket funeral for Emmett, so the world could see the brutality inflicted upon her son, underscore the film's powerful message about the enduring power of motherhood and the fight for justice. Deadwyler's performance embodies the profound strength and grace with which Mamie confronted immense personal loss and societal challenges. The film not only pays tribute to her legacy but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and human rights.

    'The Family Stone' (2005)

The Family Stone is a Christmas classic and a Mother's Day movie rolled into one! Starring Diane Keaton yet again as Sybil Stone, the matriarch of a complex and quirky family, who is shocked when her son Everett (Dermot Mulroney) brings home his uptight, conservative girlfriend Meredith (Sarah Jessica Parker) for Christmas.

Plenty of amusing chaos unfolds as Meredith tries to fit in amongst the Stone ensemble, which also features Luke Wilson, Elizabeth Reaser, Rachel McAdams and Tyrone Giordano as Everett's siblings. When Meredith, made deeply uncomfortable by the Stone family's teasing, recruits her sister Julie (Claire Danes) to be her emotional support, chaotic love triangles begin to form.

The family gathering forces all of the Stones, especially Sybil, to examine their own biases, as well as face family secrets that they've been avoiding. It's a poignant, warm film about the relationships between parents and children that captures the enduring spirit of love.

    'Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken' (2023)

This animated movie follows three generations of women — just not human women! Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor) has always known that she is a kraken living amongst humans, but when she goes into the ocean for the first time to save her crush from drowning, she learns that she, her mother (Toni Collette) and her grandmother (Jane Fonda) are giant krakens, the royal protectors of the entire ocean.

The film artfully combines humor and heart through Ruby's journey as a teenage kraken finding her place in her human and underwater heritage. The vivid animation and endearing characters draw viewers into a world where mythical creatures face real-world challenges, including the intricate relationships between mothers, daughters, and grandmothers.

When she becomes friends with rebellious mermaid Chelsea (Annie Murphy of Schitt's Creek), Ruby's bonds with her mother and grandmother are tested in a playful metaphor for teenage identity and exploration. The creative animation style creates an engaging world both above and below the sea. You'll want to join the Gillman family by the end of the movie!
