IPL 2025 final likely to shift from Kolkata to Ahmedabad

The Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) is expected to resume soon, just days after it was suspended due to the India-Pakistan war. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now working on restarting the tournament after a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan.

The IPL 2025 was suspended after the Punjab Kings versus Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala was stopped midway due to security reasons. But now reports suggest that the BCCI could announce the updated schedule for the remaining IPL 2025 games as early as Sunday evening (May 11).

According to Sports Tak, the remainder of the IPL 2025 season might restart on May 16 or 17, with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) taking on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. This means the previously abandoned match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) may not be rescheduled for now.

The BCCI has reportedly informed all teams and stakeholders about the restart and has asked franchises to bring back their overseas players and support staff quickly. The LSG squad is expected to gather by May 13, while other teams will also reach their home bases shortly after.

IPL 2025 Playoffs to stay in Hyderabad and Kolkata, final likely to shift to Ahmedabad

While the Indian Premier League 2025 restart will slightly change the schedule, the playoff venues remain the same, as Hyderabad will host Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator, while Kolkata will host Qualifier 2 which was initially set to host the final.

However, there may be a change in the final venue. Due to rain and cloudy weather predicted in Kolkata on May 30, there is a chance the final will be shifted to Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. The final could now be played on May 30 or June 1, depending on weather and logistics.

Ahmedabad is also being considered due to its larger seating capacity, which is about 30,000 more than Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

On the other hand, most IPL teams have allowed their players to return home during the break, but the Punjab Kings (PBKS) have taken a different route. The PBKS has managed to keep its overseas players in India, thanks to their head coach, Ricky Ponting.

Ricky Ponting played a key role in convincing the foreign players to remain in the country after the ceasefire was agreed upon between India and Pakistan. Punjab Kings CEO Satish Menon told PTI, “It shows Ponting's character. Only he could have pulled that off.”

'Ricky Ponting has convinced them to stay back'

Marcus Stoinis, Aaron Hardie, Josh Inglis, and Xavier Bartlett have all stayed back in India. Among the overseas players, Marco Jansen was the only one who left, but he hasn’t gone far. Actually, he is currently in Dubai and can easily return when Punjab Kings’ next game is confirmed once the new schedule is released by the BCCI.

The source was quoted as saying by PTI, “The foreign players are not used to something like this (war-like situation). So, it was natural for them to feel anxious. Led by Stoinis, they all wanted to leave at the earliest, and understandably so. But Ponting has convinced them to stay back post-ceasefire, which I think is remarkable.”
