After calling time on his Test career, Rohit Sharma opened up about his retirement from T20I cricket after leading India to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 triumph in the USA and Caribbean in June last year. Rohit Sharma had announced his retirement from T20Is right after lifting the T20 World Cup trophy with a thrilling seven-run win over South Africa in the final.
Rohit’s decision surprised many, especially since he was in top form and finished as India's highest run-scorer in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Notably, apart from Rohit, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja also retired from T20I cricket after winning the trophy in Barbados.
Now, nearly a year later, Rohit Sharma has revealed that he had already made up his mind to quit T20Is, regardless of whether India won or not. He felt it was time to step aside and allow younger players a chance, even though he was still performing well.

Rohit Sharma told Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel, “When I announced my retirement from T20Is… agar hum nahi jeet-te (T20 World Cup), toh mai waise he announce kar deta kyuki bahut try kar liya ab. It’s not fair for me to continue; you have to give chances to the others.”
Rohit also reflected on the hard work it took to reach the top and how difficult it was to let go of something he had earned through years of dedication.

The Hitsman further explained, “But after winning, you feel that you still have it in you; you are playing well, and you have given the result as well, so why not? Why not continue? Because this place that you have earned by no means came to you just like that.
You worked really hard for it. I know all that I have done in my life and all the things I have gone through to get this. So, I have an idea of all these things. So why do you want to leave? If you are batting well, giving results, then why?"
The right-handed batter said that if a player isn’t performing or things aren’t going well, it’s easier to accept that it’s time to move on. But since he played well and the team won the T20 World Cup, everything felt perfect. But still, he felt it was the right moment to step away.

'Andar se ek feel aa jaata hai'
Rohit signed off by saying, “If you are not able to give results, not bat well, and something is going wrong, then it’s okay. Then in any way you have to tell yourselves that ‘Mate, it’s over.’ But I batted well in the T20 World Cup; the result was also good—happy times. Then why? But andar se ek feel aa jaata hai ki yaar abhi yaha par….”
He ended his T20I journey as one of India’s most successful cricketers in the format. With 4231 runs in 159 matches, Rohit is the highest run-scorer and also leads the chart for the most sixes in T20Is. The Mumbaikar also holds the record for playing the most T20Is and is one of only two Indian captains to win the T20 World Cup.
