Tim Elko helped bring a national championship to Ole Miss in 2022.

Three years later, he has realized a different kind of ultimate baseball dream. The slugging first baseman was called up from Triple-A Charlotte by the Chicago White Sox for Saturday night’s game against the Miami Marlins. Elko will play first base and bat 8th for the struggling White Sox, who are buried in last place in the American League Central at 11-28 and searching for some spark.

Elko could give them just that. Elko was tearing up minor-league pitching this year with 10 home runs and 23 RBIs while hitting .348 in just 31 games.

So, the combination of the White Sox’s struggles and Elko’s success in the minors in 2025 makes his promotion to the big leagues expected, even if there is still that natural thrill of getting the call to the majors. He was a 10th-round draft pick in 2022 out of Ole Miss after powering the Rebels to that College World Series crown.

Charlotte Knights manager Sergio Santos, a former relief pitcher for the White Sox, was overcome with joy and emotion when telling Elko that he was heading to Chicago. Here is the video of Santos giving Elko the news of a lifetime, with a loving embrace at the end:

When the White Sox put out their starting lineup for Saturday night’s game, Elko’s name was on it, in that No. 8 hole spot and fielding first base. He has officially gone from national championship hero in Oxford to major-league first baseman.
