Celtic legend Scott Brown has raised question marks over his own managerial future at Ayr United after their promotion hopes were ended.
Ayr managed to make the Scottish Championship play-offs and had a 1-0 lead over Partick Thistle heading into the second leg.
However, on home soil they were beaten 2-0, losing the tie 2-1 on aggregate, leading Brown to issue a furious post-match interview.
Two goals from Brian Graham, one in each half, was enough for Thistle to advance to the play-off final.
It is a disappointing end to the campaign for Ayr, who finished third in the Scottish Championship.
Brown was targeting a place in the Scottish Premier League – a competition he won ten times as a player with Celtic – but he was left frustrated by his team’s performance.
Speaking to BBC Sport Scotland, he said: “You are not going to win a game of football if you have 11 shots and don’t hit the target. That’s disappointing.
“Late on, they weren’t even trying to win the game if I’m honest. [Lee] Ashcroft comes off, and we’ve got a five versus two at the back.
“Just desire late on, and a little bit of mentality because we are a young team, but there’s got to be people to take control and want to actually go and win the ball.
“They get three contacts in our box, and Brian is 37 years old. He’s played three games in two days, and he out-thinks and out-smarts our centre-halves.
“So, that’s the thing that you’re disappointed with because throughout the game, we were fine. We never really looked like we were going to lose the game late on because we looked like the fitter team.
“It comes down to mentality. It comes down to the willingness, the desire to go and win the game, and we weren’t good enough in the final third. And look, that’s on me.”
Brown made his name as tough-tackling central midfielder player, and he hasn’t minced his words hereThe SunThe former Scotland international then indicated he would have to consider his future at the club after missing out on promotion.
He said: “I’ve got to have a long, hard think about things and see where I go from here.
“I’ve got to take a little bit of time to think about the game and the situation because watching that, that’s not really my team.
“So, now, we’ll just see where we go together.”
Brown joined Ayr in January 2024 and has taken charge of 63 games in that time.
This season was a good one for Ayr as they won 18 of their league games only losing nine.
However, in the play-offs, they haven’t delivered for Brown and the fans.
The 39-year-old had previously worked as Fleetwood Town manager but returned to Scotland after being sacked in September 2023 by the EFL club.
And judging by these comments, he could be on the search for a new team very soon.
