Diamondbacks recall lefty Joe Mantiply, option Cristian Mena to Triple-A

The Arizona Diamondbacks have called up left-hander Joe Mantiply from Triple-A Reno ahead of Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team announced on Saturday.

Mantiply returns to the majors after being sent down to Reno on April 19. The 2023 All-Star has struggled to start the season, posting a 15.95 ERA with seven strikeouts and a 3.00 WHIP in eight games pitched.

Cristian Mena was optioned to Reno in a corresponding move. Mena was sent down following his season debut on Friday where he threw 3.2 shutout innings, striking out five batters and not allowing a hit in the Diamondbacks’ 14-11 loss to the Dodgers.

Mena is the second D-back reliever all-time to pitch 3.0+ scoreless and hitless innings with 5+ strikeouts within his first two career games (Max Scherzer).

“He was fantastic and did a great job of controlling the zone, poising himself and getting us out of the jam in the third and he was just dialed in and just went out and attacked,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said of Mena’s performance after Friday’s game.

“That’s a true player development success story (about) a guy that comes up here and sits for eight days and keeps himself as ready as he did. It was a great moment for this team and organization and I’m really proud of him.”

The D-backs and Dodgers continue their four-game series on Saturday at 5:10 p.m. Corbin Burnes will start against Dodgers righty Dustin May.
