The Egyptian Environment Ministry has issued a set of instructions and warnings for dealing with sharks in the Red Sea amidst increasing number of vacationers.
This comes to ensure the safety of beach-goers and those in the waters.
The instructions, which were distributed to hotel establishments and dive centers, include several binding measures for beach and hotel management, vacationers, and cruise ship operators.
The ministry further requires tourist village managements to place markers to mark the beginning of deep water at a depth of two meters, establish watchtowers at least five meters high, prohibit individual swimming, and provide fast rescue boats with first aid.
Guests are also required to report any abnormal marine phenomena.
The instructions also prohibit vacationers from swimming in fishing areas, during dawn and sunset, wearing any shiny accessories, or swimming while wounded.
They emphasized the importance of adhering to instructions and lifeguards.
Regarding sea trips, the ministry requires guides to provide tourists with a detailed explanation of the risks of improper behavior before beginning any activity.
Snorkeling in drift diving sites and swimming in unfavorable weather conditions are prohibited. Carrying fishing equipment, feeding fish, or attracting them by any means is also prohibited.
The ministry requires boats to install sewage collection tanks or treatment units, prohibits the disposal of waste at sea, and requires contracting with an approved waste disposal contractor – aopy of the contract must be submitted with the licensing documents.
And it also urged that direct contact numbers be available for all officials responsible for the Red Sea reserves, allowing immediate intervention in the event of an emergency.
