The Severance boys volleyball team may be playing in its first Class 4A state tournament in program history this week.
The Silver Knights certainly didn’t come into Thursday’s tournament opener as the mere new kid on the block.
Fifth-seeded Severance controlled its first-round match against No. 4 DSST: College View with a 3-1 win (25-21, 19-25, 29-27, 25-18) at Trojan Arena on the Fountain-Fort Carson campus.
That win allowed the Silver Knights to extend their lengthy win streak to 16 matches. It also afforded Severance a second-round match Friday against powerhouse Regis Groff (24-3), the top seed in the eight-team state tournament.
The Silver Knights (20-7) weren’t able to extend their near-season-long win streak any further, as they fell to the Fusion via a hard-fought four-set match (25-14, 25-15, 21-25, 25-21) late-afternoon Friday.
Nonetheless, Severance still entered play later Friday with plenty for which to play.
