The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced the suspension of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. This has come after the heightened cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, with the two countries currently at loggerheads. However, unlike the previous claims, the BCCI has temporarily suspended the tournament for just one week, starting from May 9.
This move by the BCCI was always coming, especially after the abrupt end that saw the PBKS vs DC game in Dharamsala on May 8 get abandoned due to security reasons.
IPL suspension – A correct move
IPL, in a media advisory, said:
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to suspend the remainder of the ongoing TATA IPL 2025 with immediate effect for one week. Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders.
The decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council after due consultation with all key stakeholders following the representations from most of the franchisees, who conveyed the concern and sentiments of their players, and also the views of the broadcaster, sponsors and fans ; while the BCCI reposes full faith in the strength and preparedness of our armed forces, the Board considered it prudent to act in the collective interest of all stakeholders.
The IPL’s recent turmoil began when the Punjab Kings vs Mumbai Indians (MI) match was relocated from Dharamsala to Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium due to airspace closures. Despite no direct threats to IPL venues, the tense atmosphere led to overseas players expressing anxiety and seeking reassurances from the BCCI and Indian government. The Australian players constantly talked to their cricketing board after the abrupt end to the Dharamsala game.
As the situation escalated, the IPL was ultimately suspended. Notably, Gujarat Titans (for their clash vs DC) and Mumbai Indians had already begun relocating to Delhi and Ahmedabad, respectively, before the suspension was announced. Now, it has not been confirmed as to when and if the IPL 2025 will continue. As the Indo-Pak tensions are currently an ongoing phenomenon, the BCCI is likely to take a call after the government’s orders.
IPL franchises are taking proactive steps to ensure the safe return of players and support staff, with at least three teams arranging chartered flights. According to the Indian Express, elaborate plans are in place to facilitate a secure departure. A franchise official mentioned that if players from other teams want to join, they would also facilitate those arrangements, pending guidance from the BCCI.
