Despite its excessively humble nature, pizza is not for the faint of heart. In the wrong hands, it can end up being a bland, cardboard-tasting mess slopped with mediocre sauce and cheese that ends up being akin to an oil spill. Not that there’s anything wrong with the vast majority of pies, but when all the ingredients come together in the right way, the pie might as well be levitating. There’s a reason there’s an entire Neopolitan Pizza Association.

While your local pizza joint is probably dishing out passable pies, and regional pies can range in style and taste, there’s nothing quite like that delicious leopard-spotted crust you get from authentic Italian restaurants. The pie seems to hit the perfect balance of unctuous cheese and zippy sauce to toppings, and the crust is chewy with a slightly crisp texture. It’s pure heaven in a slice.

Unfortunately, we aren’t all within walking distance of an authentic Italian pizzeria, so our best bet is to try to achieve those same results at home. If you’re down to attempt it, aside from a ripping hot oven, the most critical piece of equipment to have on hand is a pizza stone. You could grab a $69.95 one from Williams Sonoma or, if you’re thrifty, you can snag one from Aldi that’s almost seven times cheaper.
That’s right, folks. Next week, Aldi is dropping its Range Master 15-Inch Round and 15- x 11.8-Inch Rectangular Pizza Stones for a meager $9.99. Each one is likely made of cordierite stone and is crafted to withstand high temperatures in excess of 450°F. The material itself is porous, allowing for even heat distribution and moisture absorption, resulting in a perfectly golden crust with bubbly toppings.
It looks like we don’t have to take a trip to Italy after all. Although we wouldn’t turn it down if someone would like to fly us out. We’ll even bring our pizza stone! It should make it past TSA, right?
