As with many Southeast Asian countries, Indonesia is often seen as the ultimate exotic vacation spot: a perfect blend between lush jungles, picturesque beaches, rich culture, diverse wildlife, and flavorful meals and dining options.
More recently, however, the popular travel destination has been issued renewed travel warnings from the U.S. government, with the State Department advising citizens abroad to avoid certain areas of Indonesia altogether.
Indonesia itself is currently classified with a Level 2 Travel Advisory from the U.S. State Department, encouraging travelers to "Exercise Increased Caution" when venturing into the country, mainly owing to "terrorism and natural disasters."
Over the past few weeks, though, the government agency has updated Indonesia's travel advisory, labeling certain areas of the nation with a Level 4 Advisory of "Do Not Travel" (I.E., the highest travel advisory level there is).
In particular, the U.S. advises individuals visiting Indonesia to avoid Central Papua and Highland Papua, thanks in large part to civil unrest within these specific provinces of the country. These areas include major cities like Nabire, Timika and Mimika (in Central Papua) and Jayawijaya (in Highland Papua).
"In Central Papau and Highland Papau, violent demonstrations and conflict could result in injury or death to U.S. citizens," the State Department said on the website. "Avoid demonstrations and crowds. Armed separatists may kidnap foreign nationals."
The State Department also cautioned travelers to consider the fact that the U.S. government has "limited ability" to aid citizens in the case of emergencies when traveling to Indonesia, as government officials must secure special visas before visiting the areas in question.
"Due to the risks, the U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Central Papua and Highland Papua because U.S. government employees working in Indonesia must obtain special authorization before traveling to those areas," the agency explained.
