Tattoo artists and recipients are the targets of a "serious" new warning from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
A particular brand of ink used in tattooing has been recalled after the FDA detected pathogenic microorganisms during routine testing.
Two colors of Sacred Tattoo Ink are affected: Raven Black, with a lot code of RB0624 and a Best Before date of June 28, 2027, and Sunny Daze, with a lot code of SD1124 and a Best Before date of Nov. 1, 2027.
The FDA warns that "serious injury" may occur from the use of ink contaminated with bacteria, which may lead to infections or "serious health injuries" once injected through the skin barrier.
Tattoo-ink-associated infections may cause rashes or lesions that consist of red papules (raised bumps) where the contaminated ink was injected, which may lead to permanent scarring, and are easy to mistake for an allergic reaction at first.
Consumers are advised to check with their artists about the inks they use and avoid the two noted above, while artists and retailers are advised to avoid using or selling them, while the FDA works with manufacturers and retailers to remove impacted products from the market.
Anyone experiencing adverse health reactions can report them at FDA's SmartHub.
