Woman dies after April shooting near Union Station

DENVER (KDVR) -- A woman was pronounced dead after a shooting near Denver's Union Station on Monday, April 28.

Around 10 p.m. on Monday, April 28, the Denver Police Department reported a shooting in the 1600 block of Chestnut Place near RTD’s Chestnut Pavilion. This was in the Union Station neighborhood, a few blocks down from Union Station.

Witnesses say it was chaos inside RTD’s Chestnut Pavilion following shooting

The woman was transported to the hospital and was suffering from a gunshot wound. She was in critical condition, but police confirmed with FOX31 on Wednesday that the woman had died earlier this week.

Police said Jakiem Whitham, 19, was arrested in connection with the shooting on Tuesday, April 29, after witness reports and video surveillance were collected.

Following a preliminary investigation, Whitham was reportedly involved in an altercation with a second victim. Police said the altercation escalated, and the two fought over a handgun, and that is when a shot was fired. Police said Whitham and the woman knew each other.

At the time, Whitham was facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, felony menacing, first-degree assault with a deadly weapon, prohibited large capacity magazine and second-degree assault. However, those charges may change now that the woman has been pronounced dead.
