Tom Brady is hoping the Las Vegas Raiders’ newest quarterback, Cam Miller, can repeat his own meteoric rise from obscurity.
With minority owner Brady helping behind the scenes, The Silver and Black traded for former Seattle Seahawks passer Geno Smith to fill a hole under center.
A second-round pick who fought his way into a starting job after years backing up Russell Wilson, Smith has an underdog story of his own.
But Miller will have an even longer journey to the top — if he makes it — after being selected in the sixth round, just like Brady 25 years previous.
After Brady took on his role as minority owner, how much of a say he would have in personnel decisions was up for debate.
General manager John Spytek, who worked with the seven-time Super Bowl champ at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, confirmed that he had sought out his advice.
“When we are looking at quarterbacks, we’d have to be fools not to involve him,” Spytek told The Athletic. “Tom is the foremost expert on quarterback play I’ve ever been around.”
Brady’s close relationship with Shedeur Sanders led to some projections that the Raiders would select Deion’s son with the sixth overall pick that instead went on running back sensation Ashton Jeanty.
Sanders ended up slipping to the fifth round and was off the board when the Raiders made a move for Miller, with Brady’s seal of approval.
“He liked the way he threw it, his technique, throwing from the ground up and his motion,” Spytek revealed. “And he thought he had the potential to improve.”
Long before his storied NFL career, Brady was seventh on the depth chart at Michigan before fighting his way into a starting role for his final two seasons.
He entered the Draft with a 20–5 record, including wins at the 1999 Citrus Bowl and 2000 Orange Bowl.

Smith will try and lead the Raiders into a bold new eraMiller was also a winner in college. He went 45-11 as a starter at North Dakota State and won two FCS national championships.
Drawing comparisons to the greatest quarterback ever to step on a field is unfair at this point, but the 23-year-old is in a great position to learn behind Smith and with one of the great offensive minds in the building.
Brady played down his role during the Raiders’ Draft in a chat with Logan Paul on the Impaulsive podcast.
After the first two rounds had been and gone, Skip Bayless aimed an accusatory X post at the 47-year-old.
“It is now pretty clear Tom Brady – who mentored Shedeur – told the Las Vegas Raiders NOT to take Shedeur. Duly noted,” he wrote.
“I wasn’t a part of any evaluation process,” the seven-time Super Bowl champ said before co-host Mike Majlak brought up Bayless’ comments.
“I know,” he replied. “Well, everyone’s got — that’s the problem with media, everyone can just say whatever the f*** they want and get away with it.
“It’s kind of unfortunate, because there actually used to be a lot of integrity in the media.
“There is way less now because everyone actually needs crazy voices to get heard. It actually probably hurts a lot of relationships which is not the goal of broadcasting.”
The Raiders have struggled for years in a strong AFC West division, playing just two playoff games since 2002.
Brady has 45 over that timeframe and did not head to Sin City to crap out. The odds are in Smith’s favor but if he struggles under the lights, Miller may prove to have the winning hand.
