Modi lays foundation stone for delayed state capital, again

Ten years after laying the foundation stone for “Amaravati”, the Foster-masterplanned new capital city for the state of Andhra Pradesh, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi did it again on Friday.

The first time was in October 2015, when the 217 sq km greenfield project was first officially launched.

But the project has been stalled since 2019, with high court judges and other civil servants working in temporary buildings.

It appears to have been revived under state chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, and the latest ceremony is billed as clearing the way for work to start on projects including construction of the state assembly and secretariat, and the high court.

Naidu said Amaravati would be a “people’s capital” and a model of sustainable, inclusive and technology-driven industrialisation.

    ‘Dream coming true’

The prime minister’s website said that, while he was standing on the sacred land of Amaravati, Modi saw the project as “a dream coming true”.

“Amaravati is a land where tradition and progress go hand-in-hand, embracing both the peace of its Buddhist heritage and the energy of building a developed India,” he said.

He said the aim was to create a centre for AI, information technology, green energy, clean industry, education and healthcare.

    Infrastructure bonanza

Friday’s ceremony kicked off around 90 infrastructure projects in the state, which the government said would have a total value of $6.8bn.

The schemes initiated include national highways, railway upgrades and defence-related installations.
