Austin police search for persons of interest after 20-year-old killed while trying to recover stolen vehicle

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A 20-year-old man was shot, hit by a vehicle, and then died while he and a family member tried to recover their stolen vehicle in southeast Austin early Saturday morning, according to the Austin Police Department.

During a press conference Tuesday, APD Detective Michael Decker said the first report of trouble came at 3:21 a.m. Saturday to the Travis County Sheriff's office. Someone called to report a stolen vehicle in the Sun Chase neighborhood in southeast Travis County.

Around that same time, the Austin Police Department received a call from the same number about a person who was hit by a vehicle near the 5400 block of Ross Road, near Del Valle Elementary and Middle School.

Responding officers found 20-year-old Anthony Salas dead at the scene, Det. Decker said.

MAP: Where have Austin’s homicides occurred in 2025?

Investigators believe Salas and at least one family member were driving through the Del Valle neighborhood to look for a vehicle that was stolen from their home.

"They were driving the Del Valle neighborhood when they spotted the vehicle. And so while trying to recover is when the events ensued and he was shot and then eventually hit by a vehicle," Det. Decker said.

Decker said at least one member of Salas' family witnessed what happened.

Meanwhile, multiple surveillance cameras in the area captured images of three who are considered persons of interest by APD. Decker said APD believes these people were burglarizing vehicles in the south and east Austin areas during the same time period of Salas' death.

APD shared photos and surveillance video of those possible persons of interest.

APD is investigating the death as the city's 23rd homicide of the year.
