India struck Pakistani-controlled territory early Wednesday in response to a massacre of tourists in an Indian-controlled territory last month.
The missile attack left eight people and one child dead, as well as multiple others wounded, according to the Associated Press.
The Indian government, in a press release, claims it was striking infrastructure used by militants, where it states "terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed."
The U.S. Embassy of India said no Pakistani civilian, economic or military targets were hit, noting India only targeted "known terror camps."
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a post on X called the strikes "cowardly attacks" and said they were "at five locations in Pakistan." He added that Pakistan "reserves the absolute right to respond decisively to this unprovoked Indian attack."
Attaullah Tarar, Pakistani Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, claimed the attack was on "innocent civilians and mosques within Pakistan." He added that "Armed Forces of Pakistan are delivering a crushing response" to the missile attacks.
Officials from both governments are claiming three Indian jets and one drone were shot down, though the claim has not been confirmed.
The Pakistan Foreign Affairs Office called the attack "unprovoked," also stating that the attack targeted the "civilian population."
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he is monitoring the situation "closely," standing by President Trump's comments earlier in the day that he hopes the conflict between the two countries ends soon.
Rubio added that he "will continue to engage both Indian and Pakistani leadership towards a peaceful resolution."
Tensions between the two countries heightened following a militant attack last month in the Indian-controlled part of the Kashmir region, which has been a disputed area between India and Pakistan for decades. The attack left 26 people dead. While India blames Pakistan for the attack, Pakistan has denied the claim.
