ESPN analyst discusses expectations for Kalen DeBoer’s 2nd year at Alabama

Kalen DeBoer led Alabama to a 9-4 mark in his first season, as all eyes were on Tuscaloosa in 2024 as he took the reins from Nick Saban after the legendary head coach retired.

For a fanbase like the Crimson Tide’s, anything less than a championship is a disappointment, much less recording the most losses in a season since 2007. So what expectations will DeBoer face in Year 2?

“Kalen is more settled in to what he needs to do,” ESPN senior college football writer Adam Rittenberg said during an appearance on the “Three Man Front” radio show on WJOX-FM in Birmingham on Tuesday. “He’s got Ryan Grubb back as the offensive coordinator. Kane Wommack, and Maurice Linguist, and others are back on that staff. So I think that they have a much better understanding of their players and their environment, and now they have to go out and deliver.”

That “better understanding”, as well as a little more familiarity that wasn’t there in 2024, should benefit DeBoer and the program, Rittenberg noted.

“In talking to Kalen a little bit last week, (I think) there’s a comfort level that was hard to have last offseason,” he said. “It’s certainly more in place now with the players, with the surroundings, and certainly with the expectations of being the head coach at Alabama.

“Usually when you remove the iconic coach, it goes down. Kalen is more settled in to what he needs to do…” @ESPNRittenberg’s overall assessment on year one of Kalen DeBoer & expectations heading into year two! @WJOX945 | #RollTide pic.twitter.com/od3A6wLFoJ
