The Mendocino County Safe Spaces Project was awarded the largest grant this year from the Rykken and Scull LGBTQ+ Memorial fund.
The Mendocino County Safe Spaces Project (MCSSP) creates inclusive environments in Mendocino County for individuals of the LGBTQIA+ community of all ages by focusing on education, advocacy, and community building. Their plan is to do outreach throughout the county by training educators to educate communities and agencies.
Reyna Cinnamon Coupe from MCSSP said, “This award empowers us to enhance our outreach efforts in Mendocino County, allowing us to advocate more effectively for the LGBTQIA 2S+ communities. It enables us to broaden our cultural humility, sensitivity, and inclusion initiatives, fostering stronger partnerships with local institutions, organizations, and city government.”
A grant of $200 will be awarded to Ukiah Methodist Church (UMC) and the Community Action Alliance for their advocacy of LGBTQ+ individuals through creating a self defense course and a safe place for the LGBTQ+ community.
The Rykken and Scull LGBTQ+ Memorial Fund along with a non-profit in Santa Rosa called Positive Images provide scholarship awards to students who work to create a safe and inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ students and individuals. This year we gave three students scholarships each from a different county in our north bay. Mendocino County had one recipient, Ren Orellana from Fort Bragg High school, who will be receiving $3,000.
The Rykken and Scull LGBTQ+ Memorial Fund gives out awards every year to promote safety and acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community with scholarships and grants to Mendocino, Sonoma, Napa, Marin, Solano and Lake counties. The fund is overseen by the County of Sonoma Community Foundation and has awarded thousands of dollars for scholarships and grants since 2012.
This year, $20,000+ was available to award and we awarded over $16,000. We currently have $5,000 still available. For more information, contact Delynne Rogers at [email protected]
