Brett Yormark lands contract extension as Big 12 commissioner, per report

The Big 12 is keeping Brett Yormark locked in as commissioner with a long-term contract extension, according to Tuesday reports.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel was among those to report the new extension for Yormark, locking him into the Big 12 as conference commissioner through 2030. It’s a 3-year extension after Yormark originally agreed to a 5-year deal in 2022.

Since his hiring, Yormark has helped to stabilize the Big 12 in an increasingly unstable world. For any programs and conferences outside of the SEC and Big Ten, that is.

According to Thamel, the extension is a reward for Yormark’s work in stabilizing the league after the departures of Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC. While the loss of those marquee brands stings, Yormark was able to land 4 teams when the Pac-12 began to dissolve, re-adding Colorado and landing Arizona, Arizona State and Utah.

However, Yormark’s establishment of a new television deal for the Big 12 has been among his biggest and brightest accomplishments. He was able to land early negotiations with ESPN and FOX, helping secure a new deal worth over $2 billion ahead of the Pac-12’s negotiation window.

In addition to landing 4 additions, Yormark also oversaw the transition of adding UCF, BYU, Cincinnati and Houston, who had reached prior agreements to join the Big 12.

Now, Yormark will continue to lead in his post after a smashing success early in his commissioner tenure.
