BASEBALL fan Kavan Markwood has ‘a long way to go’ in his recovery from a terrifying fall.
Markwood, 20, was rushed to hospital after falling 20 feet from the stands onto the field at an MLB game.
An update was issued via a GoFundMe page set up for the Pittsburgh Pirates fan.
He was left fighting for his life in a trauma unit after the incident.
Jennifer Phillips set up the page to help fund his recovery.
And she said, “Kav took his first steps today!
“It’s a slow slow process, but seeing him up and moving was a huge win and definitely lifted everyone’s spirits.”
The page has raised $41,000 of it’s $50,000 target as of Tuesday morning.
And the update on Markwood continued, “He still has a long way to go.
“He’s dealing with a broken neck, clavicle, and back so there are plenty of obstacles ahead.
“But he’s showing real strength, and we’re staying hopeful for a smooth recovery.
“This will also require plenty of rest and following instructions from the great doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital.”
Markwood’s girlfriend Alonna Brown and sister Taryn have both spoken about his condition over the weekend.
Alonna said on Facebook, “At this time, he needs rest, peace, prayers, privacy, and all the positive thoughts and energy you can send as he continues on his journey.”
And his sister Taryn said, via ABC affiliate WLS-TV, “He was extubated this morning, was able to say my name, and even squeezed my hand.
“These small victories are monumental for us.”
Markwood’s fall at last week left baseball players and fans horrified.
Both Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs stars were seen praying and taking a knee as medics rushed to treat him.
Markwood was caught up in celebration and fell around 20 feet.
“As he jumped out of his seat to celebrate, it appeared that he had his hands on the fence in front of us, which I had done several times during the game, as well,” Amy Thompson, who was at the game, told the ABC affiliate WTAE-TV.
“I think the momentum from him jumping up in his seat and the way he grabbed the rail just seemed like he catapulted himself over the railing.”
Pirates player Andrew McCutchen said, “Truly hate what happened tonight.
“Cant help but think about that guy, his family and friends. I hope he pulls thru.”
