It is quite clear that Chennai Super Kings will have to rebuild their squad after their struggle in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). For the first time in its history, the Chennai-based outfit has failed to qualify for the playoffs for two seasons in a row.
With just two wins from 11 games, the five-time champions are currently languishing at the bottom of the points table.
They began their season with a win over the Mumbai Indians, but things have only gone downhill since then.
As they struggled to return to winning ways, they also lost the services of their captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, due to an injury.
With Gaikwad sidelined, MS Dhoni donned the captain's hat once again, but he too could not change the team's fortunes.
For years, CSK took pride in having a stable squad and not tinkering too much with it. However, it is now clear that they will have to rebuild the squad.
And as CSK look to end the season on a good note, their CEO, Kasi Viswanathan, has stated that the franchise will rebuild the squad. He also decided against blaming anyone for the team's woeful performance this season.
When asked about the reason behind the team's poor display, Viswanathan simply said that a lot of CSK players lost their form at the same time.
No player will be singled out, claims Kasi Viswanathan
"We are not blaming anyone, and we will rebuild," Viswanathan told RevSportz.
"A lot of players lost their form at the same time, that’s the reason. They all are very good players, but it can happen to any team. Also, Ruturaj (Gaikwad) got injured. Not always will you win in cricket. We didn’t play well this time. But we will come back strong," he added.
Kasi Viswanathan on MS Dhoni's future:
For years, CSK has relied on experienced players to get things done. They were also called the 'Dad's Army' for having too many senior players in the squad. However, things could change in the coming years as Viswanathan said that the franchise will now focus on youth.
"They are very talented young players. Going ahead, we will also focus on youth," said Viswanathan.
It might be one of the reasons why the franchise has roped in some young players as injury replacements this season.
They recently signed up 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre and 22-year-old Dewald Brevis. With CSK looking to sign young players, the focus is once again on MS Dhoni.
At 43, MS Dhoni is not getting any younger, and it is safe to say that he is not making useful contributions with the bat regularly.
When asked if the ongoing season could be MS Dhoni's last, Viswanathan made it clear that the franchise's stance has not changed and the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman has been given the freedom to take a call on his future.
"It’s MS Dhoni's call, we will never tell him anything. If he takes a decision, he will inform us. He hasn’t told us anything," said Viswanathan.
Meanwhile, CSK will be in action on Wednesday (May 7) when they take on Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens.
