West Indies squad for England-Ireland tour announced; Ex-RCB Pacer named bowling coach

Cricket West Indies (CWI) have announced a 15-member squad for their upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against Ireland and England, set to begin later this month. Shimron Hetmyer, who has been struggling for form with the Rajasthan Royals in the ongoing IPL 2025 season, is not included.

The Caribbean team will start their Europe tour with a three-match ODI series against Ireland, beginning on May 21 in Dublin. West Indies, placed ninth in the ICC ODI rankings, are targeting direct qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, which will be held in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Wicketkeeper-batter Shai Hope will lead the team in the upcoming series. The selectors have picked a lineup that blends experience with youth. Top-order batters Brandon King, Evin Lewis, and Keacy Carty are joined by exciting teenager Jewel Andrew, who impressed at the ICC Under-19 World Cup.

Fast bowlers Shamar Joseph and Matthew Forde return to the squad after missing the Bangladesh series. IPL performers Romario Shepherd (RCB) and Sherfane Rutherford (Gujarat Titans) are also included. Wicketkeeper Amir Jangoo, who scored a 79-ball hundred on debut, is part of the squad as well.

We Expect the Conditions to Be Challenging - Daren Sammy

Head coach Daren Sammy is optimistic about the team's direct qualification for the 2027 World Cup. He acknowledged the tough conditions expected in Ireland and England but emphasized the playing style that aligns with their long-term goals.

"These matches form a critical component towards the 2027 World Cup, and there are signs of the team building consistency following the series sweep against Bangladesh and the win over England late last year," Sammy said.

"We expect the conditions to be challenging, but we are creating a culture and mindset which emphasises playing the brand of cricket that is taking us closer to some of our overall objectives."

Ravi Rampaul Roped in as Bowling Coach

The West Indies have made key additions to their coaching staff ahead of the upcoming ODI tour. Former West Indies pacer and 2012 T20 World Cup winner Ravi Rampaul has taken over as the new bowling coach, replacing former New Zealand cricketer James Franklin.

Former Irish all-rounder Kevin O’Brien will join the support team for the Ireland series, bringing local experience during the three-match leg against his former side.

The West Indies will play the three-match ODI series against Ireland at Clontarf Cricket Club from May 21 to 25. They will head to England for another three ODIs, starting at Edgbaston on May 29. The squad for the upcoming T20I series in England has not been announced yet.
