High school tennis star Braun Levi has died following a traffic accident in Manhattan Beach, California over the weekend. He was 18.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Braun died after midnight on Sunday, May 4, due to a collision with an alleged drunk driver. Per a statement from Manhattan Beach Police shared via Instagram, a call came in on Sunday at 12:46 a.m. about a traffic accident involving a pedestrian in the 100 block of South Sepulveda Boulevard. When officers arrived on the scene, the victim, who was not identified in the press release, was found lying in the street.

“Upon arrival, officers located a victim lying in the street next to a vehicle,” the statement read. “The Manhattan Beach Fire Department arrived on the scene and transported the victim to a local trauma hospital. Despite life-saving efforts by medical personnel, the victim succumbed to their injuries.”

Police arrested a 33-year-old Los Angeles woman identified as Jenia Belt on suspicion of drunk driving and homicide in connection with the crash. She was sent to Manhattan Beach jail on Sunday for booking, per police statement.

Braun was a senior at Loyola High School, a Catholic Jesuit school, in Los Angeles at the time of his death. His graduation was just one month away. Braun and his family had relocated to Manhattan Beach after the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles earlier this year.

Braun, who was set to attend University of Virginia in the fall, was in the top national ranks of boys tennis in the United States. Just five days before his death, the 18-year-old tennis player had won the Mission League doubles championship.

Principal Jamal Adams announced the sad news in an email to Loyola students and staff on Sunday.

“Braun was a shining presence in our Loyola family, bringing light, joy, and inspiration to everyone he touched,” Adams wrote, inviting the entire school to attend a prayer vigil on campus that same day. “All members of our community are welcome to join us as we gather in unity and remembrance.”

According to Brian Held, coach of the Loyola varsity tennis team, Levi was a three-year captain and “probably the most decorated player to ever play for the school.”

“We are all stunned, devastated and heartbroken with this tragedy,” Held told the LA Times via email. “Braun was the most amazing, all-around leader, whom everyone loved, even his opponents. He was just that type of kid — unique and special. As one of his teachers, I witnessed how he brought joy to everyone.”
