After a very long winter, I'm ready for some time sipping a margarita poolside. The sun on my skin, my favorite playlist in the background and an icy-cold drink in hand is a dream come true. But if you're like me and you sometimes feel like your margarita is just a bit too syrupy or if you've found yourself dreading the cleanup after cocktail hour, I found a clever solution.
This genius drink hack from content creator and author Julianna McIntosh (@join_jules) is about to be your new summer cocktail staple. It’s light, refreshing and perfect for anyone who wants big flavor with zero hassle. It skips the mess and the shaker—all you do is pour, stir and enjoy right from the bottle. Here's how to do it.

Whether you’re by the pool, at the beach or just relaxing on the patio, these bottled strawberry margaritas are exactly what summer (or Cinco de Mayo) calls for. With sparkling water as the base, they’re bubbly, not-too-sweet and incredibly easy to customize. Plus, everything mixes right in the bottle, so there's no blender, no shaker and no sticky countertops.
For this, you will need a bottle of sparkling water (McIntosh uses fan-favorite Topo Chico), strawberry syrup (store-bought or homemade), fresh lime juice, orange liqueur (like Cointreau or triple sec), tequila blanco and a lime wedge for garnish.
Before you do anything, make sure your sparkling water is ice cold. Stick it in the fridge for a few hours or give it a quick chill in an ice bath. This step is key because a warm margarita is no one’s friend.
Pour out (or drink!) about one-third of the sparkling water from the bottle. This creates enough room to add your other ingredients without risking overflow. Using a small funnel or a steady hand, pour the strawberry syrup, lime juice, orange liqueur and tequila directly into the bottle.
Give the bottle a gentle swirl or use a long skewer to give it a slow stir (you don't want to flatten the bubbles). Wedge a slice of lime in the neck of the bottle and your drink is ready!
If you want to get a little fancy, you can give the bottles a quick cleaning, then rub a lime wedge on the neck of the capped bottles and sprinkle with Tajin seasoning or coarse salt for a fun way to add a little extra flavor and flair.

Why This Hack Is So Genius
This recipe nails that delicate balance between flavor and freshness. The sparkling water keeps things light and fizzy, while the strawberry syrup adds just enough sweetness to round out the citrus and tequila. It's far from those sticky-sweet frozen margaritas you might be used to, and that’s exactly the point! This margarita feels grown-up, yet fun, and because everything is portioned into individual bottles, it’s great for parties, picnics or just keeping things casual.
You can also swap the strawberry syrup for your favorite fruity flavors. Try raspberry or mango puree, your favorite citrus juice or get spicy by dropping in a jalapeño slice or two.
Want a mocktail version? Just skip the tequila and liqueur, and you’ve got a fizzy strawberry-lime refresher that’s perfect for everyone.
If you’re making a batch for friends, prep a cooler full of cold sparkling water bottles and stash your mix-ins in a small caddy with mini funnels or pour spouts. Let everyone build their own bottle margarita and garnish it their way. It’s fun and makes cleanup a breeze.
