BeachLife Festival closes out its sixth year with major acts

The sixth annual BeachLife Festival finished with a rocking good time, with legends The Beach Boys and Jackson Browne among the acts to take the stage during the Redondo Beach event’s final day on Sunday, May 4.

“Jagged Little Pill” hitmaker Alanis Morissette was scheduled to headline the festival later on Sunday. Thousands converged on the BeachLife grounds, around Seaside Lagoon, on Sunday, under skies that were covered by clouds most of the day, until the sun broke through in the late afternoon.

Sunday concluded three days of music in Redondo Beach that saw an eclectic blend of genres, including Lenny Kravitz and Sublime headlining the previous two days, along with Cake, Skip Marley, Pretenders, Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles, Train and many more performing throughout the weekend.

Before the sun set on the sixth annual event, co-founder Allen Sanford said “this year, we crossed a threshold.”

“The years of passion and love our team has poured into the seeds of BeachLife have blossomed into a garden of family, community and stoke,” Sanford said. “BeachLife is becoming part of the fabric of the South Bay because its essence is owned by the community, not us.”

The attendees also have passion for BeachLife.

Alison Marandola Labovich and Jonathan Labovich have been regular BeachLife visitors, with last year being one of the only times they’ve missed a headliner — and that’s because the Culver City couple got married in May 2024.

“Five people left our wedding to go see Sting, and they’re like, she’ll understand, because they were BeachLife friends,” Marandola Labovich said. “Now, year after year, this gets to (be) our anniversary. So we were actually in for sound check earlier, and we danced to some songs like it was our party.

“There have been friendships that have been generated and now we go to each other’s weddings and we keep in touch year over year,” Marandola Labovich added. “We’ve done every event they’ve had and 100 people come to this because we’ve dragged them here because we love it so much.”

Like Marandola Labovich, Redondo Beach’s Laurel Gutierrez said BeachLife is a “very well organized” event — and does a good job at bringing a solid lineup of music.

Kravitz, Morissette, Cake and the Pretenders were a major draw this year, but “it’s fun to see the local bands too,” Gutierrez said. That includes the South Bay’s Tomorrows Bad Seeds, who performed Saturday.

Redondo Beach’s Jorge Farias is also a longtime fan of the festival.

“My family is here with me,” he said. “We are having a great time. The lineups are great.”

The three-day event has attracted around 30,000 a year since its inception in 2019, with names like Willie Nelson, Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, Sting, Incubus, Gwen Stefani, John Fogerty, The Black Crowes, The Black Keys, Weezer, Sheryl Crow, The Smashing Pumpkins, Steve Miller Band, Jane’s Addiction and Counting Crows, among many more.

It was the same thise weekend, with thousands attending the festival each day. And this year, BeachLife also added the 21,000 square-foot California Surf Club, which is open for VIPs. The club is a public restaurant and member-ship based club the rest of the year.

As for the music, while the big-name acts help sell tickets, BeachLife is also a showcase for young talent, like Devon Thompson, who earned a spot on the Rip Tide stage after winning a Battle of the Bands competition against nine other acts at The Venice West in February. Thompson performs what she calls “raw and unfiltered and real” music that blends alternative rock and pop.

“It was so awesome and amazing, and I’m so excited and stoked to be here,” Thompson said after her set on Sunday. “I’m just so overjoyed. I really am.

    “Hard work pays off.”

On Sunday, meanwhile, youngsters Aurora Irizarry and Ava Mangine waited for The Beach Boys to take the stage in the afternoon while relaxing on BeachLife’s hottest new must have — inflatable couches. Redondo Beach mom Ashley Irizarry heard about the trend on Saturday at her daughter’s soccer game and ordered it on Amazon.

This was the family’s first BeachLife.

“We just got here” Ashley Irizarry said. “So far, it’s great. Everything is well laid out.”
