Is there anything better in sports than a Game 7?
Down 3-1 with two minutes to go, the Winnipeg Jets did the impossible, netting two goals to force overtime and then finished the job in double-overtime for a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Blues in Game 7 of their electric first-round series.
Jets captain Adam Lowry completed the miraculous comeback, scoring the game-winning goal in double-overtime to set up a date with the Dallas Stars in Round 2.
All hope felt lost for the Jets only 40 minutes earlier, as they looked like they were on the way to becoming the latest team hit by the Presidents’ Trophy curse. The Blues had figured out goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and the offence just couldn’t find a rhythm.
But nothing is out of the question in Game 7. The Jets opted to pull Hellebuyck with three minutes to go down 3-1 and reaped the rewards.
Vladislav Namestnikov started the comeback, firing a shot through traffic that took a couple deflections and found its way past Jordan Binnington. Then, after a messy final O-Zone possession, Cole Perfetti played hero with a stunning tipped goal with only 1.6 seconds remaining in regulation — the latest game-tying goal in Game 7 history.
It was Perfetti’s second marker of the night, as the 23-year-old scored the Jets’ opening goal in the second period.
Other than the Jets’ late-game heroics, the Blues looked to have the game in hand from the puck drop. Jordan Kyrou and Mathieu Joseph scored two goals on the team’s first four shots, and Radek Faksa found the back of the net with 35 seconds left in the second period to erase Perfetti’s earlier score in the frame.
Turns out, it wasn’t enough.
Hellebuyck stepped up big in overtime after allowing the three goals, shutting the door in the third period and overtime and finishing the game with 26 saves on 29 shots to keep the Jets’ playoff hopes alive.
With the win, the Jets will get set for a second-round matchup against the Dallas Stars, who took down the Colorado Avalanche in a similarly dramatic seven-game set.
