Tennessee and Auburn produced quite a wild and chippy series this weekend in Knoxville, complete with an ejection for star Vols pitcher Liam Doyle. However, that ejection was not revealed until after the conclusion of Game 3.
According to Wes Rucker with 247 Sports, Doyle was ejected from the first game on Sunday, which was technically the conclusion of Game 2 in the series. The star lefty threw just half an inning in Friday’s opener before a weather delay, and he was inserted into the game on Sunday as a reliever.
The ejection stems from a rundown with Auburn’s Bristol Carter that culminated with Doyle tagging out Carter at the plate. The two began barking back and forth, leading to the benches clearing, before both teams were separated.

— Paige Dauer (@PaigeDauerFDP) May 4, 2025According to Rucker, Doyle’s suspension will give 2 games, with the second game on Sunday counting as the first one. Tennessee’s midweek matchup vs. Indiana State should count as the second game, so Doyle should still be in line to start next Friday’s opener vs. Vanderbilt.
Adding a bit of confusion to the matter, Doyle was never publicly ejected with a formal announcement during the game. Auburn’s Carter was not ejected.
So technically Liam Doyle was ejected from that first game today. So he’ll be suspended two games. But the finale against Auburn was one, and Tuesday’s game will be two, so it doesn’t really matter. But Auburn player wasn’t ejected. And Doyle was never publicly ejected. WILD.
— Wes Rucker (@wesrucker247) May 4, 2025Tennessee has been sliding in recent weeks, dropping Sunday’s rubber match to Auburn in a wild weekend of SEC baseball. Now, the Vols will try to regroup with the SEC Baseball Tournament right around the corner.
Liam Doyle ejected during Tennessee’s series vs. Auburn, will serve suspension Saturday Down South.
