Charley Scalies who appeared in both The Sopranos and The Wire, has died of Alzheimer's at the age of 84.
Scalies played Thomas “Horseface” Pakusa in all 12 episodes of the second season of The Wire. He also appeared as Tony’s high school football coach in a dream sequence in the fifth season of The Sopranos.
His daughter, Ann Marie Scalies, told The Hollywood Reporter that he died Thursday in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
In 2019 Scalies told Chesapeake Bay Magazine, “The only time I have even been on the docks is when I worked on The Wire and the only time I even met a stevedore was shortly after I was cast as Horseface.”
"As with all the other characters I’ve been blessed to portray, Horseface lives inside of me. I invite him out to play as needed." He added.
Scalies was born in Philadelphia on July 19, 1940, and raised in South Philadelphia above the pool hall his father owned, where he kept customers laughing with his jokes and impressions as a kid. The pool hall later inspired a screenplay he wrote, It Takes Balls. After college he entered the work force and started a family but acting continued to call to him. He answered the call in the early 1990's, performing in local theater productions and going on casting calls. This led to bit parts in TV and movie productions such as Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, Jersey Girl, and 12 Monkeys.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Angeline; his children, Chuck, Angeline, Tony, Christa and Anne Marie; and his grandchildren, Charles IV, Christopher, Domenic and Amelia. His family said, "His favorite audience was always seated around the dinner table.”
Donations can be made in his name to the Greater Pennsylvania Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association or to the PCS Theater in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.
