Tony Vitello had taken all he could handle from a wild weekend of SEC baseball, and he was tossed from Sunday’s rubber match between Tennessee and Auburn.
Originally, the 3-gam series began on Friday night, but the Vols and Tigers had barely started the game when Mother Nature came calling. The two teams would complete Game 1 on Saturday, and they would get deep into Game 2 before weather once again halted the action.
The good news for Tennessee is that the Vols walked off Game 2 when things resumed on Sunday. Unfortunately, the rubber match has been all Auburn, up to the point that Vitello got ejected.
Auburn was holding a 6-0 lead in the 5th inning — with the bases loaded — when Vitello argued a check swing call. He was promptly tossed, but the head coach got his money’s worth, taking a turn around the infield to bark at every member of the umpire crew.

— Austin Brown (@Austin_Vols) May 4, 2025So far, Tennessee has not been able to mount a rally with Auburn still holding a 7-1 lead entering the bottom of the 6th. It’s a tough spot for the Vols after dropping back-to-back series vs. LSU and Kentucky, entering the weekend series vs. Auburn.
While the Vols are still among the favorites to win the College World Series this season, they are in need of a spark as we approach the SEC Baseball Tournament right around the corner.
