Tennessee walks off Auburn in delayed Game 2, evens series

It took longer than expected thanks to Mother Nature, but Tennessee and Auburn have completed the second game of their weekend series. The Volunteers walked it off in extra innings to win 5-4.

With the bases loaded and 1 out in the bottom of the 11th inning, Tennessee coach Tony Vitello turned to Chris Newstrom to hit for Reese Chapman. The skipper made the right call, as Newstrom plated the game-winning run with a single up the middle.

It was a much-needed win for Tennessee. The Volunteers have dropped back-to-back series against Kentucky and LSU. Auburn won Saturday’s series opener 6-1, putting UT in danger of losing a third-straight series. AU had a 4-3 lead in the 9th inning before Dalton Bargo hit a game-tying home run. In extra innings, the series was again delayed by the weather in Knoxville.

When play resumed Sunday, Vitello turned to Liam Doyle out of the bullpen. Doyle, the game’s winning pitcher, tossed 2 scoreless innings. He allowed just 1 hit, striking out 3 while walking 2 over 34 pitches (18 strikes).

Tennessee and Auburn will be back at it to decide the series. First pitcher of the rubber game is set for 2:32 p.m. ET.
