Doncaster boss Grant McCann has channelled his inner Lionel Messi following his side’s League Two title triumph.
The Yorkshire outfit beat Notts County 2-1 at Meadow Lane on Saturday to confirm themselves as champions on the final day.
A first-half brace from Rob Street put Rovers two up heading into the break, before Alassana Jatta scored a late consolation goal in added-time.
But Doncaster held on for the vital three points – finishing four points clear of second-placed Port Vale after they lost 1-0 at home to Gillingham.
It’s the first time they have won the fourth-tier title since the 2003/04 season.
Meanwhile it’s the club’s first piece of silverware since being crowned as League One champions in 2013.
Doncaster came close to sealing promotion last year in what was McCann’s first season in charge at the Eco-Power Stadium since he initially left in 2019.
But they were nothing short of sensational this campaign, with Doncaster boasting the best goal difference in the division [+23], while also winning the most games [24] and losing on the fewest occasions [10].
And after what has been another hectic season, McCann enjoyed a well-deserved rest on Sunday – recreating Messi‘s iconic World Cup picture in the process.
After helping Argentina beating France in the 2022 final, the Barcelona legend cuddled the trophy in bed – with the image becoming the most liked post in Instagram history.
McCann has taken a leaf out of Messi’s book by having a siesta next to the League Two title – though it hasn’t gone anywhere near as viral.
Captioning his X post, McCann simply stated: “Afternoon Kip with this beautiful thing.”

Meanwhile plenty others simply left two-word replies in the comment section, saying: “My gaffer.”
McCann failed to hide his delight at his side’s achievement this campaign, as he told the media: “We’re the champions and that was our plan at the start of the season. And we’ve done it.
“It feels brilliant. Promotion is excellent and it doesn’t come along often. But a league title means more.
“When you’ve that ‘W’ for winners next to your name, nobody can take that away from you.
“I told this to the boys and said whether you stay at this club or go elsewhere, people want winners.
“I’m buzzing for the boys because nobody can take this away from them.
“I thank all the fans too for their support today and this season.”
