Five men have been arrested in different parts of the country on Saturday, suspected of allegedly plotting to carry out a terror attack.
Police said four of the five men were Iranian nationals, while the other man’s nationality is yet to be confirmed. All five remain in police custody.
The investigation relates to a suspected plot to target a specific premises. Officers have been in contact with the affected site to make them aware.
“This is a fast-moving investigation and we are working closely with those at the affected site to keep them updated,” said Commander Dominic Murphy, Head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command.
“The investigation is still in its early stages and we are exploring various lines of enquiry to establish any potential motivation as well as to identify whether there may be any further risk to the public linked to this matter.”
The men arrested were two aged 29, one aged 40, one aged 46 and the final man’s age is as of yet unknown.
They were arrested all over England – one in Swindon, one in west London, one in Rochdale, one in Stockport and one in Manchester.
As a result, officers are carrying out searches at a number of addresses in the Greater Manchester, London and Swindon areas in connection with the investigation.
“We are working closely with local officers in the areas where we have made arrests today and I’d like to thank police colleagues around the country for their ongoing support,” said Cmdr Murphy.
