Bolsa Grande football coach Michael Acosta, who helped the school end the longest playoff drought in Orange County football history, is no longer the Matadors’ coach, a spokesperson for the Garden Grove Unified School District confirmed Friday.

“Michael Acosta is no longer with our district,” stated Abby Broyles, public information officer for the district. “Personnel matters are confidential as required by law.”

“We appreciate Michael’s time coaching at Bolsa and wish him well in his future endeavors,” she added.

Acosta stated earlier this week that he resigned after four seasons. He also spent four seasons as an assistant coach.

“After eight years of traveling upwards of three hours round trip from south Corona, it was time for a change,” he said.

In 2022, Acosta highlighted his tenure by leading Bolsa Grande to the playoffs for the first time since 1987, snapping a playoff drought at 34 seasons.

The Matadors earned the top seed in Division 14 and lost to eventual champion Whittier Christian 28-21 in the quarterfinals.

Bolsa Grande also reached the playoffs in 2023 and 2024, losing in the first round each season. The Matadors were a combined 11-11 in past two seasons.

Acosta finished with a record of 20-24.

Acosta also coached girls flag football and assisted with track and field at the school, said David Mamelli, the district athletic director.
