As-Suwayda: Four killed while attempting to confront Israeli aircraft

Four people were killed in an airstrike that targeted a farm in the Kanaker area west of As-Suwayda in southern Syria, today, Friday, May 2, by an Israeli drone.

The As-Suwayda governorate reported via Telegram that four individuals were killed as a result of being targeted by Israeli aircraft while attempting to shoot it down.

A reporter from Enab Baladi stated that the farm that was hit belongs to Issam Azzam, who was a member of the local factions responsible for protecting the village of Kanaker.

Azzam was killed along with three others: Hamza Naim Kahoul, Layth Bahsas, and Fadi Abu Tarabeh.

According to residents of the Kanaker area who spoke to Enab Baladi, the drone has been hovering over As-Suwayda since the morning.

Eyewitnesses told the local network “Suwayda 24” that when the drone was flying, gunfire was directed at it from a medium machine gun near the targeted farm, and within seconds, the drone retaliated by bombing the farm.

The strike on the farm coincided with the security deployment of General Security Forces in As-Suwayda to maintain security and enhance stability in the region, according to the official news agency (SANA).

The security forces that headed to As-Suwayda came in response to a statement issued by representatives of the Druze community in the As-Suwayda governorate and representatives of the Syrian state that called for enhancing security in the governorate and recommended protecting the road leading to the capital, Damascus, by the state.

The statement, which Enab Baladi obtained a copy of, requested the activation of the role of the Ministry of Interior and the judicial police in As-Suwayda, led by the residents of the governorate.

It also demanded the securing of the As-Suwayda-Damascus road and held the government responsible for it, calling for the establishment of security and safety on Syrian territory.

The statement emphasized the commitment to “a nation that embraces all Syrians, free from strife, sectarian tensions, personal grudges, vendettas, and the irrational tribal mentality.”

The attendees rejected calls for division and secession from Syria, reaffirming their “steadfast national positions.”

The statement followed a meeting that included representatives of the Druze community in As-Suwayda, led by the spiritual leader of the community, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, and the Sheikhs of the mind, Youssef al-Jarbou’ and Hamoud al-Hanawi, in addition to local faction leaders, notably Yahya al-Hajjar and Laith al-Balous.

However, according to information obtained by Enab Baladi, al-Hijri attended the meeting but did not endorse its outcomes.

Israel has taken a stand against the entry of the General Security into As-Suwayda, considering that its movements in southern Syria aim to protect the Druze.

Israeli fighter jets conducted a strike near the presidential palace in the Syrian capital, Damascus, early this morning.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar stated that the army attacked a target near the presidential palace in the capital, Syria, reiterating their commitment to protecting the members of the Druze minority, according to a statement reported by The Times of Israel.

The newspaper quoted them as saying, “We will not allow the deployment of forces south of Damascus or any threat to the Druze community.”

This is the second time Israel has launched an attack on Syria within two days, after pledging to defend the Druze minority.

Additionally, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that “this evening’s air force attack on the presidential palace in Damascus is a clear warning message to the Syrian regime.”
